Intense pulsed light (IPL) Photofacial, or IPL Rejuvenation, is a non-invasive aesthetic treatment that improves facial discoloration and evens out skin tone. Dr. Marina Med Spa utilizes the award-winning Lumecca® by InMode Aesthetics to improve pigmentation, reduce redness caused by broken blood vessels & rosacea, and to stimulate collagen production.

IPL uses focused light-generated heat to destroy and breakdown the pigment cells that cause discolorations on your skin. After being destroyed, the cells are absorbed and eliminated from the body as part of the natural immune response. The process also stimulates collagen production in the superficial layers of the skin, firming and refreshing your skin.

As with most treatments, results are dependent on the patient’s lifestyle, skin type and how many sessions they have already received. Patients usually need a series of 3-5 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for best results. Although it may sound counterintuitive, people with lighter brown spots need more sessions than people with darker spots. After a series is completed, most people come in once or twice a year for maintenance.

During an initial consultation you discuss your skin rejuvenation goals and ask any questions. Then we create a personalized plan of care that best treats your blemishes. It is important to note that IPL Treatment works best with fair skin tones and is advised against treating patients with darker skin tones.

When you arrive for your session, your IPL technician provides protective eyewear for both you and them and then applies a cooling gel to your treatment area. The Lumecca IPL has a specially designed head to maximize the treatment area and shorten your time in the chair.

Your session may last from 10-40 minutes, depending on your goals and treatment plan. For best results, most people need 3-6 sessions, though you may notice your skin looks brighter and fresher even after the first treatment. Typically, it would be best if you waited 4-6 weeks between treatments, which gives your skin time to replenish and process the destroyed pigment cells.

Immediately post-treatment the skin will appear red, darkening of lesions such as vessels or pigmentation can be noticed and mild to moderate swelling depending on the concern being treated. Lesions will darken within 3-5 days and will cause micro-crusting to be naturally exfoliated off within 7-10 days for the face and up to 14 days for the body.

A consultation is mandatory prior to treatment to determine the skin’s functioning and your goals. Lumecca requires the skin to be prepped for a minimum of 2 weeks on a gentle cleanser, hydrator and SPF.

Post Treatment:

Avoid both direct and indirect sunlight as much as possible during the 30-day healing period. Sunlight can not only prevent your skin from healing properly but can more easily cause new damage during this time. To avoid sunburn during this vulnerable time, you must protect your skin for at least 30 days after each treatment by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Too much heat is also bad for your skin as it tries to heal and regenerate. This means you must avoid hot baths or showers for several days after each treatment. You should also avoid strenuous exercise during this time, as excess sweat increases your chances of infection, while potentially delaying the healing process.

If you have any redness, swelling, itching, or burning following an IPL treatment, applying aloe vera gel or cold compresses can help. If these symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, you should contact your doctor.

Do not apply makeup immediately after an IPL facial treatment. It’s best to try and minimize (or completely avoid) using makeup for the next 12 hours.

Keep skin clean by using a gentle cleanser twice a day, only use cold or warm water, and gently pat your skin dry instead of rubbing it.

During the week or so following an IPL facial treatment, any pigmented spots in the treated areas may darken in color before eventually peeling off. Other blemishes may also become apparent before they eventually flake off. It is imperative not to scratch or pick at your skin during this time, or you will run the risk of infection, possibly resulting in new scars and imperfections.

Avoid any products with the risk of irritation, or which might interfere with the healing process. The list of potential irritants includes products high in Vitamin A, such as retinoic acid, Tretinoin (Retin-A), and alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA).

Skin exfoliants should also be avoided for at least a week after each treatment, whether chemical or mechanical.

If needed, an over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream can be used once or twice a day on any irritated areas, as long as the skin surface is intact.
